History

ToSustain's evolution

ToSustain features organic letterforms that aim to bridge the dichotomy between serif and sans-serif typefaces. After a process of trial and error, the typeface shifted several times from serifs to sans-serif forms, ultimately falling into the very specific category of “sans” typefaces .” ToSustain draws inspiration in particular from the work of Karl Gerstner, notably his “Gerstner Original” ( 1980 ), and Otl Aicher, with his “Rotis superfamily” for Agfa ( 1988 ). The typeface proposes distinctive ways of connecting curves to stems, primarily by making the stroke asymmetrical between the inside and outside of the shape, as seen in the lowercase “n.” In addition, letters such as the “b” and the “d,” feature an asymetrical bowl, thus revealing the typical structure of a serif typeface. Available in Regular and Regular Italic, Medium, Bold and Black, ToSustain offers highly legible text with a unique character, in both small and large sizes. Designed between 2013 and 2024, it was first released in 2016.
